Over the course of the project we have collected a huge amount of memories. Here we present a selection which spans from fashion to neighbourhood, from food to travels, including snippets on Sudbury Neighbourhood Centre, which has been at the centre of the community since the late 1970s.

I remember years ago when we moved up, there used to be a travelling library, and it used to stop on East Lane… Yes, on a Friday – a mobile library, you’d call it, I suppose. Well, you’d know the time. I think it came about 3 o’clock. Then what you’d do, you went up there and borrowed a book, you like any other library and have it back in a couple of weeks or whenever…

I think I remember listening to something like “The Archers”, although I never, you know, but what else could you listen to? It was before the time when they had a lot of pop music by Radio Caroline and things like that. You couldn’t have them not I remember somebody delivering my brother’s first transistor radio by post to the house. “Oh! What’s this? It’s a transistor radio”

I remember loads of songs from the ‘60s because you used to be able to sing with them. You know, that was that was the big thing. You could hear them. You could understand the words and you could sing along. You know, that was..that was ..I used to enjoy doing that. I remember the first record I bought, which I think was The Four Tops because we had a record player set in the wood. Veneer wood and it was quite nice, but it seems a bit antiquated because the speakers were all in part of it.

Well, like I say, you could sort of really talk about the different fashions people had ‘cause we went through the bit where people used to wear flared trousers and people, everyone used to wear long hair. I found a photograph of myself when I was looking through the other day and there was one. I’ve got a picture of myself when I’m standing with my mother at Kew Gardens. My hair is down to my shoulders. “Who is this person?” You know, but I didn’t really, you know it was about as long as it got you know but yeah, some of my friends had very long hair, you know. One of them, he had hair right down, halfway down his back, I think but we, yeah ‘cause fashions were changed a little bit, you know. We used to have these funny shirts with round collars. They look awful now. I’ve seen photographs of them.

The only thing that would stand out in some ways was the GEC estate. They had like a tower they had something because it was Marconi. Something, I don’t know if it’s something to do with radar and there was a tower over there on East Lane and I can remember that. It used to stand out as sort of like an object but you couldn’t see it from here. I mean the only other thing really was Harrow on the Hill.
